An A0 sheet covers exactly one square meter and measures 841 x 1189 millimeters. When ordering large posters or technical drawings, you need to know the exact A0 size to get a sharp result. At Jensen Print in Copenhagen, we produce large formats for companies and organizations every day. Correct file setup from the start saves time and ensures a better end product.
The exact dimensions of an A0 size
An A0 sheet has fixed dimensions defined by the international ISO 216 standard. This ensures a uniform format across most countries.
The exact dimensions of A0 are:
841 x 1189 millimeters
84.1 x 118.9 centimeters
33.1 x 46.8 inches
Many people relate most easily to the familiar A4 format. You can place 16 pieces of A4 paper within the confines of a single A0 sheet. This makes the format suitable for tasks that require visibility from a distance. You may want to see our full range of printing solutions on the products page.
Below you will find an overview of the entire A series, showing how the formats relate from largest to smallest:
| Format | Bredde x Højde (mm) |
|---|---|
| A0 | 841 x 1189 |
| A1 | 594 x 841 |
| A2 | 420 x 594 |
| A3 | 297 x 420 |
| A4 | 210 x 297 |
| A5 | 148 x 210 |
| A6 | 105 x 148 |
| A7 | 74 x 105 |
| A8 | 52 x 74 |
| A9 | 37 x 52 |
| A10 | 26 x 37 |
The table shows the halving principle in the A-series.
Pixel dimensions and print setup
Resolution is crucial for quality when designing graphics for an A0 size. A blurry image on a screen becomes significantly worse when enlarged to a full square meter. Our experts always check the files manually before production, but the best result starts with the right setup in your design program.
Photographic quality requires a resolution of 300 DPI (Dots Per Inch). At this resolution, your document should measure 9933 x 14043 pixels. If your file primarily contains vector graphics or text for viewing from a distance, you can often make do with 150 DPI. This requires a file size of 4967 x 7022 pixels.
Remember to add bleed (trimming margin) when you set up your document in Adobe InDesign or Illustrator. We recommend adding 3 mm on all four sides. Background colors and images should extend completely beyond the edge of the document. This prevents white edges when we cut the paper to size after printing. Large format paper weight calculation
Paper quality is stated in grams per square meter (g/m2). Since an A0 sheet covers exactly one square meter, the weight calculation is simple. If you choose 80g/m2 paper, a single A0 sheet weighs exactly 80 grams.
We rarely use 80 gram paper for large posters, as it is thin and easily creases. A typical choice for indoor posters is 170 gram paper, where the sheet weighs exactly 170 grams. If the poster is to be hung in a frame or used for a presentation, many choose 250 gram paper for extra stiffness and durability.
We use FSC-certified paper for our productions and operate a CO2-neutral website. If you need paper qualities for other formats, you can see our selection of brochure and leaflet solutions.
Professional use of A0 for conferences and trade fairs
A0 is a common format for events where information needs to be communicated to a large audience. As a B2B printing company in Frederiksberg, we often supply materials for large events in the capital area.
A classic example is a Scientific poster for academic and medical conferences. Researchers need space to present complex data and graphs. Here, an A0 size provides the necessary surface area so that the text remains readable, even when several people are standing in front of the poster. We regularly produce these materials for students and researchers from institutions such as CBS.
When international companies hold events in Bella Center, fast delivery is often crucial. We offer same-day delivery in Copenhagen via bicycle couriers, so a Conference poster arrives on time, even if the file is only approved late. The format is also widely used for construction drawings, architectural plans and large banners.
The Mathematics Behind the ISO 216 Standard
The ISO 216 standard is a logical mathematical system that is used almost all over the world. The exceptions are the USA, Canada, the Philippines and some South American countries, which use their own formats based on inches.
The A series is built around the square root of 2 (approximately 1.414). The specific aspect ratio means that the proportions are maintained no matter how many times you cut the paper. If you take an A0 sheet and cut it in half along the long side, you get two A1 sheets. If you cut an A1 sheet in half, you get two A2 sheets, and so on down to A10.
The system makes it easy for designers and printers to scale documents. A file designed for A4 can be enlarged directly to A0, without changing the proportions and without creating white borders. We handle file scaling for our B2B customers on a daily basis when we deliver prints in Copenhagen.
Convenient handling, storage and shipping
A sheet of paper measuring one square meter is unwieldy if not packed properly. To give you an idea of the size, an A0 sheet is equivalent to covering the torso and legs of an average adult holding it in front of them. To protect the print from bending and moisture during transport, posters are typically rolled up and placed in sturdy poster tubes.
When you receive a rolled A0 print, you should leave it flat on a clean table for a few hours before hanging it. Place a few light books in the corners to smooth out the paper. If the poster is to be used outdoors or hung for a long time, we recommend surface treatment. We offer professional lamination up to 150 mic thickness. This makes the material resistant to scratches and dirt.
For companies ordering large quantities of course material, we often handle the packaging and distribution directly to the end user. We assemble everything from large posters to teaching materials and course folders so that it is ready for use upon receipt.
